WGNR Celebrates 80th Anniversary

Some enterprising women gathered together and held a landmark meeting at Lismore Golf Club on 14th September 1932. Eighty years later, Women’s Golf Northern Rivers has remained a strong force in its region. This first meeting was such an important beginning for golf in the district that Miss Leonore Wray, Vice President of the NSW Ladies Golf Union attended and was given a Civic reception by the Mayor of Lismore. The first affiliation fees were set at this meeting to 10/6 for clubs of 30 associates or over, and 5/- for clubs with less than 30 associates. The Northern Rivers District now boasts approximately 1,612 lady members from 18 affiliated clubs. To mark the 80th anniversary milestone a tournament is being held on 23/24/25th July at Lismore Workers Golf Club where it all began. A dinner will also be held at the Lismore Workers Club on Tuesday night of the tournament. The dinner will be the platform to not only celebrate the Northern Rivers District s rich history, a book will be unveiled providing a visual photo journey through the history of women and their golf clubs in the Northern Districts from 1932-2012. The contributions to golf in the region, and in some cases at state level, of various women including two of its Life Members Irene Fuller and Beryl Harris will also be celebrated. Leading up to the celebrations, a new logo for WGNR Inc. was created. The design is based on a concept submitted by Anne Perrin from Kyogle Golf Club. The new colours and image reflect the northern rivers area from the “Mountains to the Sea”. The Women’s Golf Northern Rivers also introduced new shirts, white with aqua, matching the colours in the logo.
Lynne Ritchie, Golf NSW s Director and Chair of Course Rating & Handicapping Committee (pictured left), recently attended a meeting of the WGNR Inc. Lynne visited with the Office Bearers and interested members to explain the course rating and handicapping system as well as provided the latest information on the list of clubs whose ratings were released. Pictured donning the new WGNR Inc. shirts are acting President Margaret Rogers, Secretary Robyne Trotter and Vice President Cathy Blissett. WGNR s new image signifies the pride and dedication of its members. Although some of the women struggle to maintain its club memberships, every club has stories to tell on its inspirational and committed women working hard to ensure golf is available for everyone to enjoy.
