Whelan celebrates birthday in style

The first round of the 2017 Trimax Victorian Women’s Sand Greens Championship has teed off today at Wedderburn Golf Club.

Located approximately an hour drive north-west of Bendigo in the Loddon Shire, the beautifully manicured 18-hole sand scrape course was presented in top condition for the championship. 115 players hit off in pleasantly conditions with the intermittent sunshine providing some warmth throughout the day.

Martina Whelan has celebrated her birthday in style, returning the best score of the day with a 75 off the stick. The Grampians member scraped in 3 birdies for her round of 3 over par to take a two- shot lead from Helen Pascoe of Buninyong on 77. A further shot behind all tied on 78 are trio of Mary-Anne Davis from Murray Downs and Neangar Park members Bernice Campbell and defending champion Helen Leech.

Sue Amos of Pyramid Hill is on top of the B-Grade gross leaderboard with an 85 off the stick and is 2 shots ahead of local member Glenda Bird on 87. In C-Grade, Fleur Finlayson has taken a commanding lead after a personal best round of 86 off the stick. The 24-marker from Serviceton is 7 shots clear of Commercial Albury’s Ros Kerr and Cheryl Trotman of Balmoral on a pair of 93s.

Finlayson recorded an outstanding nett 62, which included 7 pars for the best score of the day and takes the C-Grade nett lead by 5 shots from Kerr on nett 67. In A-Grade, Whelan also recorded the best nett score of 67 with Axedale’s Deborah Bish 2 shots behind on nett 69. Four players are tied for the nett lead in B-Grade with Amos, Sue Sutton (Neangar Park), Judi Guest (Midlands) and Sue Morse (Grampians) all on nett 68.

The official Tournament Dinner will be held at the club tonight before play resumes again for round 2 tomorrow morning.
