Bernd Wiesberger and Ricardo Gonzalez both posted opening rounds of 65 to lead the Johnnie Walker Championship by one shot on day one. Austrian Wiesberger had a faultless opening round on Thursday that included seven birdies – three on the front nine and four on the back – including four consecutive birdies around the turn. He shares the lead on the opening day at Gleneagles with Gonzalez, who also enjoyed a fruitful day after an inauspicious start. He bogeyed the opening hole but immediately brought himself under par with an eagle on the par-five second. Gonzalez also hit seven birdies – including three birdies in the final three holes – and would have held the lead outright had he not bogeyed the 11th. Six players, including Australian Brett Rumford, are tied on six under par after opening rounds of 66. Rumford, Igancio Garrido, Oliver Fisher, Mark Foster, Ross Fisher and Thongchai Jaidee are all well set going into the second day and will fancy their chances of challenging for the title. A further five players are another shot back on five-under par with 80 players under par after the first day.
