Wolstenholme downs Stewart in thriller

England&aposs Gary Wolstenholme has defeated Australian Tim Stewart 2 & 1 in the weekend&aposs final of the Imagetec NSW Amateur Championship at the Terry Hills Golf and Country Club. Stewart took an early lead and was never headed in the morning round as his opponents parried with birdies and pars to leave just one hole between them at most points throughout the morning round. Wolstenholme has been a regular competitor in the NSW Amateur over the last few years and was successful in winning the Medal (Strokeplay) section in 2005. Last year he all but won the NSW Amateur having been beaten on the 37th hole of the final by local favourite Won Joon Lee. The players graciously took part in a brief lunch with former winners of the NSW Amateur and some of the nostalgia must have rubbed off on Wolstenholme as he vaulted to a birdie, par, par, birdie, birdie start in the afternoon to turn the half-way deficit of one down to a three-up lead by the sixth (24th) hole. From then on it was on Stewart to play catch up and it was not beyond him as he dragged the match back to one down by the 34th hole. Stewart bravely attacked the pin and unfortunately for him it trickled off the green into an unplayable lie. Wolstenholme rolled his 15 metre putt to within inches and Stewart graciously conceded. The players have had a week on a superbly presented golf course with marvelous hospitality. The New South Wales Golf Association thanks all concerned with the conduct of the tournament.
