Women’s Senior Amateur set for final showdown

Australian Women&aposs Senior Amateur Championship The finalists for the 2008 Australian Women’s Senior Amateur Championship have been decided in thrilling fashion in bleak conditions at Ulverstone Golf Club. The first semi-final of the Championship was a repeat of last year s final, between defending champion Sylvia Donohoe and Deirdre Brander, both from NSW. Their on-going battle continued this year, and lived up to expectations in front of a modest crowd. In the end, Donohoe won 1 up after Brander s putt on the last hole to force additional holes lipped out. Donohoe will take on Liz Smyth from ACT in tomorrow s Final, after Smyth defeated three-time Champion Faye Payne from Qld. Smyth held on for a 1 up victory after being 3 up with 5 holes to play. Donohoe will go into tomorrow s Final looking to win her 5th Australian Women’s Senior Title. The Age Flights also produced some close contests. In the New Age Flight, Annette Baggie from NSW overcame Jill Vanderkooi, also from NSW, 2/1, and will now take on Queenslander Dorothy Retschlag after she defeated Chris Taylor from the ACT 1 up. In the Veteran s Division, Carmel Smith from Qld defeated Shirley Walsh from the nation s capital 4/3, and will take on Lyn Hancock from WA in the Final, after Hancock needed 19 holes to overcome Sandra Gillies from NSW. The Super Veterans Flight will see the Final between Joyce Smith from Victoria and Wendy Beattie from Qld. Smith has been a stalwart of the Championship, never having missed a Championship since it commenced 21 years ago. Finals commence at 8.00 am on Friday morning and will be played over 18 holes.
