The stage is set for the 2011 Srixon Women’s Australian Stroke Play Championship which begins tomorrow at Huntingdale Golf Club on Melbourne s sandbelt. The women’s stroke play marks the beginning of the Srixon Australian Amateur Championships which run until March 23rd with the men’s championship and amateur finals held at Woodlands Golf Club and Victoria Golf Club beginning on Thursday. Heading the field at Huntingdale is defending champion and World Number 1 amateur Cecilia Cho. The New Zealander has just returned from representing her country at the Queen Sirikit Cup and enjoyed her opening Huntingdale experience this morning. I played the back nine. There were heaps of bunkers around so I was quite surprised. In India, the fairways were so narrow so it helped with my long game, Cho said. In India, if you were off the fairway, there was virtually no rough and just bushes. Here it s the bunkers instead of the bushes. Cho said she had felt some pressure since becoming Number 1 but tried to focus on her game and was aiming for success in both events. Yes, especially in the stroke play, more so than the match play. When you turn pro, it s all stroke play, there s not much match play, Cho said. But the Amateur is a bigger title and I want to win both of them, she added. Joining Cho is compatriot Lydia Ko who finished leading amateur at the 2011 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open at Commonwealth Golf Club in February and has also been in excellent form. The Australian charge will be led by ActewAGL Royal Canberra Classic champion Ashley Ona (QLD), Lake Macquarie Amateur champion Breanna Elliott (VIC) and fellow National Squad member Jessica Speechley (WA). Entry to the tournament is free.
