Sue Wooster & David Hall held their overnight leads to claim victories in the 2016 Victorian Mid-Amateur Championship.

Wooster (The National) claims back to back Victorian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships are her closing round of 77 at The National (Long Island) today in what was hot windy conditions. Wooster’s two round total of 151 included 5 birdies across the two days.

“I played some solid golf. I hit a lot of fairways and greens. The greens are tricky” Wooster mentioned.

Wooster sets up her 2016 in perfect style with the win. Wooster’s year looks pretty busy as she plans to play in the US Mid-Amateur and US Senior Amateur.

David Hall (Eastern) managed to clinch victory in the Men’s Championship posting rounds of 68 & 74. The final round of 74, which included birdies on his last two holes, was good enough to edge out The National member Clay Nicholls. Remarkably this is consecutive Runner Up’s in the Mid-Amateur for Clayton.

Hall praised the condition of the course and told Golf Victoria post round of his enjoyable two days.

“I hit it really well. I hit 14 greens and made a few long putts” He said about his opening round of 68.

“I started well today and knew I had the victory after finishing birdie, birdie” Hall remarked.

David tried his luck at Tour School last month but found the going tough. A person trainer for the last 12 years, David now looks to possibly start a traineeship with the PGA in the coming years.

Nett champions for 2016 were Xiaoling Liu (Spring Valley) with nett rounds of 75 & 78, while Tristan Clement (Southern) won the men’s event with nett rounds of 70 & 75.

The hosting of both rounds by The National Golf Club has been appreciated with player acknowledgement of the condition of the course.

The Men’s Victorian Mid-Amateur was initiated in 2005 after successful trials both overseas and nationally with the Women’s section introduced in 2011. The two events played concurrently has also been mirrored by the Oates Vic Open in the recent past, which is due to be played once again at 13th Beach Golf Links from 4-7 February.
