Sophie Yip has held her nerve in a thrilling finish to the Victorian Girls Championship which saw her come out on top at Moonah Links for the second year running.
Yip started the final round with a commanding five-shot lead to fellow Concord GC member Belinda Ji, however consecutive bogeys for Yip on holes eight and nine saw the lead cut to two at the turn.
Ji matched Yip hole for hole until making further inroads with a birdie on hole 15 which saw the deficit reduced to one.
Both players sensed the opportunity and raised their games to another level, with both Yip and Ji making birdies on the par-four 16th in an impressive display.
Despite all the pressure that Ji had applied, Yip stuck to the task at hand and finished with pars on 17 and 18 to ultimately run away with the title.
Yi finished with a final round of 75 for a 293 total, two clear of Ji’s 295 whose superb final round of 72 came agonisingly close to delivering her the championship.
Both girls demonstrated maturity well beyond their years and should be commended for the spirit in which the final round was played.
In the boys’ championship, Nathan Page blitzed the field in the final round with an incredible six-under-par round of 66 on his way to victory.
Page fired a remarkable back nine of 29 which consisted of five birdies and an eagle to run away with a six-shot victory.
Finishing in second place was Western Australian Jordan Jung at five-under par.
In the girls’ age divisions, Sophie Yip claimed the under 16s with a dominant display and the under 14s went to promising up-and-comer Molly McLean.
McLean finished a staggering 30 shots clear of her nearest rival and will be one to watch in future.
The boys’ age divisions saw NSW GC member Jye Halls claim the under 16s whilst Bailey Goodall hung on for a slender one-shot victory in the under 14s.
The 2020 Victorian Boys & Girls Championship will shift to Cranbourne Golf Club and will be played January 13-16.
