Claney Claims Heathcote Crown

The Heathcote Golf Club hosted the 8th annual Senior Amateur tournament today with a quality field of 61 players taking to the course. Heathcote is the first of three events this week, with Shepparton and Tocumwal also hosting Senior tournaments in the coming days.

The course was presented at its finest for the players, despite lower than average Autumn rains. Luckily the players had a relatively calm day with the sun making an appearance on more than one occasion.

Gordon Claney prevailed as the 2015 Champion, after the Kingston Heath member returned a neat 74 around the par 71 layout. Claney cruised around his opening nine with more than respectable two over par 38 setting him up for his great round, finishing one over on the back to total 3 over par. In second place and two shots behind Gordon was The National’s Guy Krall on 76. Guy finished this year with the same score as he did in the tournament last year.

Familiar face Helen Pascoe from Buninyong Golf Club scored a fine Scratch Stableford score of 31 points to triumph in the women’s scratch component, edging out Tocumwal Golf Club’s Bobette Wilkinson who scored 27 points. Bobette’s brilliant round of 37 points off a 10 handicap was the standout winning round in the Stableford section, taking the lead back off Helen by 4 points.

In the men’s handicap section, it was Tocumwal’s Phillip Nunn that proved too strong for the remainder of the field with a great round of 71 from a handicap of 8. Phillip was lucky enough to win in a three-way countback from Hill Top’s John Fanning and Yarram’s Ignatius Duivenvoorden..

Many of today’s competitors will make the short trek to Shepparton in the Goulburn Valley when the opening round of the 2015 Shepparton Senior Amateur commences at 11:00am.
