Could this be the oldest Social Golf Club in Australia?
This year the lads from Mortlake Gas Works Social Golf Club celebrate 80 years of continuous operation. The club was formed at the first Annual General Meeting held on October 22, 1935. The Gasworks at Mortlake may be long gone but the Golf Club itself is a survivor.
They recently celebrated their 80th year with an Anniversary Golf Day held at Twin Creeks Golf Club at Luddenham. This was a great day attended by many former members from all over the state. The course was great and everyone had a ball reminiscing about the 80 year history of their club. The oldest player there was Gordon Waller (nicknamed “The Coach”) who joined the club in 1959 and is still playing today at age 88, 56 years later.
The membership consists of present and former employees of AGL plus a motley crew of friends and relatives. The Club has around 20 current members and plays at a good mixture of courses throughout the Sydney area, including The Ridge in the Shire, Antill Park in Picton, Studley Park at Camden, Dunheved, Penrith, Massey Park, Rosnay, Woodville and George’s River. They play every fortnight, mostly on Saturday mornings. Our Christmas Game at Massey Park is an event not to miss, with hampers to the winning foursome keenly contested.
