The final event of the 2014 senior calendar began this afternoon under clear skies at the picturesque Port Fairy Golf Club. A full field of one hundred and one men and fifteen women were tested throughout the afternoon as the prevailing wind continued to strengthen. The coastal layout, as in previous years, was once again presented in excellent condition and is a true test of traditional links golf.
With a controlled ball flight and steady touch around the greens at a premium, it was Gordon Claney of Kingston Heath who will have a four shot advantage over the field heading into tomorrow’s final round after carding a fine score of level par 72. Claney, the recently crowned Australian Senior Amateur champion will have nett winner of day one Henk Van De Ven in hot pursuit after he fired a round of 76 along with Ian Frost of Bendigo who carded a 77 and another four competitors a further shot back after carding rounds of 78. .
In the men’s nett section, as mentioned earlier, Henk Van De Ven from Howlong Golf Club leads the way with a nett score of 70, closely followed by Glen Bruce, Bill Black & Robert Taylor who all carded nett scores of 71.
Meanwhile, in the women’s section, Helen Pascoe of Buninyong leads the field with a score of 79, followed by Julie Taylor of Anglesea with Val Mackintosh representing The Dunes out in front in the stableford section with a fine score of 37 points.
The final round commences at 8:00am tomorrow morning via a shotgun start, with players scrambling to gain last minute Order of Merit Points in both the Doug Bachli & Paul Lulofs Order of Merit Trophies to round out the year.
