Inverleigh Golf Club played host to 88 players from across the state for round one of the 2014 Women’s Sandgreens Championship today. Strong winds and a torrential downpour presented a challenging front 9 for the players, but luckily the storm passed through bringing sunshine for the afternoon.
Helen Leech (Neangar Park) carded a 6-over round of 78 for the best gross score, closely followed by 2013 Sandgreens champion Helen Pascoe of Buninyong only 2 shots behind. Another 2 shots back with an 82 today is fellow Buninyong member Helen McSparron.
The best nett score of the day came from Bannockburn’s Glennis Jolly, who had a nett score of 67 off a handicap of 30. There were 3 other nett scores in the 60s coming from Sheryl Lewien (Quarry Hill, hcap 35), Helen Leech (Neangar Park, hcap 9) and Mary McCallum (Parklands, hcap 31), carding 68 and a pair of 69s respectively.
The club is now busy at work preparing for the tournament dinner held at the golf club tonight before the final round tomorrow commencing at 9am.
