In the week leading into the Victorian Open at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links, the Victorian Junior Open provides a great opportunity for juniors to experience the environment of a professional tournament. As such the course today proved to be a challenging set up for the competing field with thick rough lining both fairways and greens.
Jack Deftereos-Brennan (Woodlands GC) earnt his first win with a round of 73. Deftereos-Brennan was a deserving champion with solid play throughout the day, shooting an even par front nine and one over back nine. Deftereos-Brennan was closely followed by Ted Donoghue (Metropolitan GC) two shots back, and local boys Sam Marles and Jack Murdoch.
Deftereos-Brennan’s solid form also won him the under 16 section, five shots clear of his nearest rival. Will MacKenzie (Warrnambool GC) posted a gross 80 and nett 68 earning him the under 14 boys section and overall boys handicap section.
Julienne Soo was victorious for the second year running in the girls section carding an impressive 71, which included 8 birdies. Soo now looks forward to competing in the championship later in the week. In the under 16 section, Anna Gavardinas (Victoria GC) prevailed with a score of 78 and Linely Ooi took out the under 14 section with 80.
A promising future for young Blair Mason who won the Stableford section with a score of 40 points!
