The skies finally cleared up to a long overdue sunny day at Sorrento Golf Club for the second and final round of the Sorrento Senior Amateur. After yesterday’s trying conditions, it was a relief for all players to keep the umbrellas and rain gear stowed away, and the scores across the board significantly improved.
Gordon Claney of Kingston Heath has continued his superb form, coming in with the best score of the day to tie with round 1 leader John Neeson from Catalina. The pair both shot 153 for the two rounds, but Claney’s solid score of 72 today secured him the win on a count-back over Neeson’s round 2 score of 75. This is the third victory in a row for Claney, who recently also captured titles at the Melbourne Seniors Classic and Moyne Senior Classic.
In the nett section, it was Brighton’s Wayne Aigner scoring a blistering nett 67 today to claim the trophy over local John Fisher from Sorrento. Aigner off a handicap of 8 score a two round nett total of 141 to edge out Fisher by a mere stroke.
The Victorian Senior Club Teams Championship gross trophy was won by The National team of Tony Briers, John Wheeler and Adrian Barr. The trio fired a 2 round aggregate score of 497 to beat their nearest opponents from Commonwealth by 4 shots. As each team can only win one prize in this event, the team of Andrew Buxton, Stephen Lilley, and Peter Vial from Royal Melbourne claimed the handicap trophy, with an aggregate nett score of 467. Woodlands Team C were the runner-up team 2 shots back.
Thank you to all that travelled out to participate in the first event on the 2014 Victorian Senior Order of Merit calendar. Next up is the Kooringal Senior Amateur held at Kooringal GC on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 January 2014.
