PREVIEW: Men’s Riversdale Cup

The best young female golfers in Australia were on show in the Riversdale Cup last week. Now it&aposs time for the men to show us what they&aposve got! A strong field of 162 players will tackle the prestigious Victorian course, fighting to have their name etched on the trophy alongside former winners including Aaron Baddeley, Robert Allenby, Ivo Whitton, Michael Scott. All of these players also captured the Australian Open crown at some point in their career, so there is no doubting the pedigree of players that show up each year for this highly regarded event. This year sees the 113th running of the Riversdale Cup and the field is one of the best that has been assembled in recent memory. Leading the charge will be the National Squad contingent featuring Australian Amateur Champion Rohan Blizard, and defending Riversdale Cup and former Australian Amateur Champion Tim Stewart. This duo has been at the forefront of Australian amateur golf for the last couple of years and will be looking for more solid performances to stake their claim for Australian selection at this year&aposs World Amateur Team Championships. Also in the mix will be team mates Justin Roach, Scott Arnold, Brett Rankin, Jordan Sherratt, Michael Foster, and locals Matthew Griffin, Daniel Beckmann and Josh Younger. While the talent pool of Australians is vast, a number of internationals will be looking to become only the second player in the last 20 years to take the trophy back overseas. Englishmen Jamie Abbott, Adam Wainwright and Stuart Burns lead the charge, but trans Tasman rivals New Zealand will also be seeking a piece of the action with Danny Lee, Nick Gillespie and Danny An sure to be contenders for the Silver Ferns. Lee was recently selected in the Asia-Pacific team to contest the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy against the Europeans at Valderrama Golf Club in Spain in April. The Australian pair of Blizard and Stewart were also selected, adding further weight to this talent-packed field. Stewart indeed goes into the week as defending champion having defeated Andrew Dodt by just one stroke last year. The Queenslander who has since turned professional, looked set to hoist the trophy before Stewart came home with back-to-back birdies to snatch the title from his countryman&aposs grasp. The action gets underway on Wednesday March 5 with the Australian Men&aposs Foursomes Championship followed by round one of the Men&aposs Riversdale Cup on Thursday.
