World number two amateur Cecilia Cho has become the first New Zealand woman to win the Riversdale Cup in Melbourne. The 16 year old Aucklander shot a final round three-under par 70 on the Riversdale layout today to finish on 11-under par and win by four strokes in the 53rd year of the tournament that attracted players from Europe, Asia, New Zealand and the best from Australia. It proved a double success for the New Zealanders with 13-year-old Lydia Ko, ranked number three in the world, finishing runner-up on seven-under after firing a four-under 69 today. Cho said she was delighted with her win, set up when she broke the course record, previously held by Kiwi Sarah Nicholson, with her eight under par 65 in the second round. The greens were fast and quite a lot of slope on them. But I played really well on that day and made six birdies in a row,” Cho said. I felt quite tired at the start of the week after the New Zealand Open but I got nine hours sleep most nights which was great. It’s been a good week though and good for Lydia too. Now we are looking forward to the Queen Sirikit Cup in India. Following the Queen Sirikit tournament, Cho and Ko will return to Melbourne for the Srixon Australian Amateur Championship from 16-23 March. Cho moved to three-under through 12 holes today before making two bogies at the 15th and 18th holes, sandwiched by two further birdies. Ko managed five birdies and an eagle in her round, mixed with three dropped shots. Their Queen Sirikit Cup team-mate Emily Perry finished in a share of 15th place. Korean and Kingswood Golf Club member Su-Hyun Oh was in third place on four-under par.
