n Day has conceded the lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship but the Australian remains in contention with one round to play.
Day started out with a share of the lead at TPC Boston today and shot a 69, but he was overhauled by American Russell Henley (65), who leads the $8 million tournament at 12-under-par through 54 holes. Another American, Billy Horschel, is a shot back while Day is tied for third with an ominous world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who shot 64 today.
The Queenslander, who was tied-second in the first round of the playoffs in New York last week, was four-under par through 13 holes today but gave back shots on the 14th and 15th holes, saying he was "out of synch'' before hitting a hooked tee shot on the 15th.
"I played so good but yet I still didn't shoot the score I expected to shoot out there,'' he said. "You know what? I'm still in contention, two shots out of the lead right now. Who knows what the weather's going to bring tomorrow? I'm definitely looking forward to getting back into it.''
World No. 2 Adam Scott is out of contention at four-under par, tied-27th. But another Australian, Geoff Ogilvy has an outside chance of making a run after a 65 today. Ogilvy is tied-11th at seven-under par, and has put himself in with a chance of qualifying for the third round of playoffs in Colorado next week. Starting out the week 100th on the Fedex Cup standings, Ogilvy is now projected 73rd, just three spots out of where he needs to be.
Day is projected seventh. "The objective tomorrow is to come out and try to win,'' he said. "But there's a lot of good players behind me, and in front who also want to win.''
