On a warm Tuesday afternoon in the lead-up to the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, 30 young MyGolfers from Royal Melbourne Golf Club participated in a MyGolf clinic with LPGA Tour player Chella Choi and Ladies Masters champ and Golf Australia Rookie Squad member Su Oh.
Being able to participate in a MyGolf clinic with Chella and Su excited the youngsters, but the fact that the ABC was filming the clinic might have elevated their excitement levels even further!
Chella and Su introduced themselves to the MyGolfers and were happy to answer any questions they had. The MyGolfers didn’t hold back and were eager to ask them a number of questions ranging from what they eat for breakfast, what age they started playing golf, what music they listen to and what their favourite hobbies are away from golf.
Chella was absolutely blown away at how young some of the MyGolfers were. She informed the group that she didn’t start playing golf until the age of ten, so she was very surprised to see that quite a lot of the MyGolfers were under ten, some as young as six! It definitely brought a large smile to her face as she praised them for taking up golf.
The youngsters were extremely excited when they were told that Chella and Su were going to hit several shots for them. They all had smiles from ear to ear and watched in awe at how accurate they were and how far they could hit the ball, especially with their drivers!
Chella was quite happy to hit some extra balls for the kids as she only received her clubs from the airport about eight hours before the clinic. The more practice she could squeeze in before the tournament started, the better.
Rather than having Chella and Su hit all the shots, two lucky MyGolfers were selected to compete in a ‘drive-off’ against them. They were quite nervous to be standing on the driving range next to players they aspire to be one day. However, it didn’t take long for the excitement to kick in as they grabbed their drivers and simultaneously hit the ball as far as they could. Unfortunately Chella and Su had the girls covered in terms of distance, but that might be a different story in five years!
Before Chella and Su left the clinic, they made sure they had a group photo with the MyGolfers, signed their autographs and answered any final questions. The youngsters were really appreciative of the time they devoted to the clinic and wished Chella and Su all the best for the week and season ahead.
