Mark Stanford (The National) has won the Melbourne Senior Classic played at Spring Valley & Woodlands Golf Club with rounds of 71 & 76. The National member produced quite a remarkable round yesterday in what was challenging conditions. Mark edged out Gordon Claney (Kingston Heath) by one shot after a fine round of 72 by Claney. Stanford mentioned post round that he was happy with his performance.
“I hit the ball really well. And didn’t miss a putt within 6 feet yesterday” Stanford mentioned.
In the nett, it was Yallourn member Bill Estrada winning by three shots after posting rounds of 74 & 70 nett for a 144 total. Kelvin Steel (Eastern) was runner up on 147 nett.
In the women’s sector, Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) played consistent golf to claim the Scratch Stableford prize with 58 (28, 30) total scratch stableford points. Christine Greenhatch produced the best Stableford scores with two rounds of 31 points for a total of 62 points.
Blue skies and calm winds were very welcomed by the players considering the brutal conditions faced in round one. The final field consisted of 58 men & 7 women.
Spring Valley & Woodlands come together each year to provide senior golfers with an opportunity to play on an impressive Sandbelt layout. Both clubs provided great hospitality to all involved.
It’s a quick turnaround for a lot of the players, as the Eureka Senior Amateur is next on the calendar and is to be played from Tuesday 15- Wednesday 16 November at Midlands & Buninyong Golf Clubs.
