For the first time in four trips down under for the Emirates Australian Open, two-time champion Jordan Spieth has failed to finish inside the top two on the leaderboard.
The Texan’s week finished with a 72nd hole eagle at the par-5 18th, but a Sunday 67 – his lowest round for the tournament – won’t be enough to lift him into contention.
At 6-under Spieth currently holds the clubhouse lead, but he trails New South Welshman Cam Davis by five shots as the rising Australian star charges home.
Davis is one shot clear of fellow young gun Lucas Herbert, while playing partners Jonas Blixt and 2016 Emirates Australian Open joint runner-up Cameron Smith sit level at 9-under par.
Three dropped shots in three holes from the ninth onwards for Jason Day has seen the Queenslander slip to 7-under for the week, leaving him likely out of the mix.
