Three Aussies have their US PGA Tour futures in their own hands in tomorrow's final round of the Web.Com Tour's Boise Open.
Attempting to join compatriots Cam Davis and Matt Jones as graduates of the four-week finals series, Curtis Luck, Aaron Baddeley and Brett Drewitt are all within touching distance of a card on the main tour after a rollercoaster third round at Hillcrest Country Club in Idaho.
Luck, of Perth, was superb in carding a five-under-par 66 that sent him charging up the leaderboard to nine under in total and a share of 23rd.
More importantly for the Cottesloe member, it has him at 16th on the overall finals series rankings with the top 25 after next week's Tour Championship in Florida to be promoted for 2019.
The maths has far too many variables across a tightly packed leaderboard, but Luck would definitely advance if he were to match today's round tomorrow – and might do so even with something slightly less impressive.
Baddeley, with rounds of 68-67-68, sits at 10 under overall, in a share of 11th in the tournament and projected at 18th on the final standings.
The veteran Victorian's future, as with Drewitt, relies far more heavily on finishing position. Should Baddeley maintain his 11th position on the Boise leaderboard, he'll be right on the threshold of advancing.
Drewitt has less margin for error having started the tournament at 66th.
The Sydneysider couldn't replicate his superb second round today, fighting a wayward driver on the back nine but battling well to card a 71 to sit T6 at 11 under, just three out of a three-way tie for the lead at 14 under, featuring former Presidents Cup player Sangmoon Bae, of Korea.
Drewitt is projected into 23rd place as it stands, but will need to finish fifth or better to wrap up his 2019 card. A stumble would leave him vulnerable and reliant on his Florida form next week.
It's also not beyond the other Aussies remaining in the field to make a charge with Cam Percy (-6), John Senden (-5), Rhein Gibson (-5) and Stuart Appleby (-4) all handy, but needing others to fall backward to cash in.
MEANWHILE, New South Wales professional Travis Smyth has gone a long way toward securing his Asian Tour card for next year with a top-10 finish in South Korea.
Smyth finished tied-seventh in the Shinhan Dongeon Open near Incheon, posting 12-under par with four consecutive rounds better than par.
The Golf Australia rookie squad member was 66th on the Asian Tour money list prior to this week.
